2007 Ontario Spending Spree Budget
Agriculture
Dalton McGuinty has continued his tradition of making the Ministry of Agriculture a lead Ministry… in cuts. Funding for the Ministry of Agriculture is budgeted for $191 million less in 2006-07 . The planned spending is a half billion dollars less than 2004-05.
Dalton McGuinty broke his election promise to develop a new generation of farm safety nets. The Risk Management Program that crop farmers have been asking for since June 2005 has once again been totally ignored.
Dalton McGuinty has ignored Ontario’s tobacco farmers’ calls for exit strategy funding to help them leave the industry, despite raising $1.26 billion from tobacco taxes this year and expectations of another $1.21 billion in 2007-08.
While the province has spent more than $135-million on Source Protection planning and associated administration, the Stewardship Fund to support farmers for activities that reduce threats to drinking water is only $7 million a year.
