2007 Ontario Spending Spree Budget

Agriculture
  • Dalton McGuinty has continued his tradition of making the Ministry of Agriculture a lead Ministry… in cuts. Funding for the Ministry of Agriculture is budgeted for $191 million less in 2006-07 . The planned spending is a half billion dollars less than 2004-05.
  • Dalton McGuinty broke his election promise to develop a new generation of farm safety nets. The Risk Management Program that crop farmers have been asking for since June 2005 has once again been totally ignored.
  • Dalton McGuinty has ignored Ontario’s tobacco farmers’ calls for exit strategy funding to help them leave the industry, despite raising $1.26 billion from tobacco taxes this year and expectations of another $1.21 billion in 2007-08.
  • While the province has spent more than $135-million on Source Protection planning and associated administration, the Stewardship Fund to support farmers for activities that reduce threats to drinking water is only $7 million a year.
